Wild West scenery

It's been a while , these scenic items were almost finished before I went away and finished shortly after I returned, but "real life" intervened. They were all printed on my FDM 3D printer and then assembled onto bases. In future I'll assemble them onto bases digitally before printing.

"Poka-dot" cactus, I plan to print more small versions for mediterranean prickly pears.

My mine railway and wagons, the tracks were based before printing. I still need to build a mine entrance and workings.

Western Gunfight buildings

Here are the four buildings I received from my daughter for Christmas, they are all now assembled and painted, and have even been used once in their unpainted state.

I will add some logos later once I have sorted something out.

Mexicans and Miners

Two more sets of characters for the Wild West, both sets were 3D printed, the Mexicans by myself and the Miners were purchased from a local 3D printer at a Wirral Warboot.

The central figures in the miners looks usable as the town drunk!

Back to the Wild West

A bit of a non combatant collection, acquired/3D printed to meet the need to provide bystanders.

The bystanders were 3D printed, but not by me as the files were too expensive as I only wanted one of each and then I found them at Wirral Warboot at a good price. The cattle were seperate and I bought the files and printed them myself.

The cattle were sold as Nguni cattle for the Zulu War so I printed more in 20mm to use there

28mm Woodland Indians

It took a while, but I've now completed Warlord's plastic Woodland Indians, I tried to keep the colour scheme relatively simple.

I'm not completely happy with the final wash as I used the end of a bottle of AP Strong Tone and it dried a bit blotchy in place, but not bad enough to require repainting, phew!

At some point I will probably buy or print some American Militia to boost the limited numbers that I have at the moment

Female Gunfighters

These are the Dead Man's Hand figures that I acquired to give some variety to my existing gunfighters

Quite a nice bunch of figures and it tempts me to get some more, maybe Mexicans or Indians

Maybe I should call them the ladies of Hickup County after a comment from friends that I was "Wild Bill Hickup"?

ECW - Burghill's Horse

One of the longest serving regiments in Sir William Waller's armes was Burghill's Horse, later commanded by Jonas Vandruske after Colonel Robert Burghill was wounded at the battle of Lansdown. The figures are all Warlord plastic.

In front are a few skirmishers to make my existing unit up to 12 figures.

Waller's Dragoons

Yet another batch of 3D printed stuff in this case English Civil War dragoons scaled up from 15mm to 28mm. I have painted them as Waller's Dragoons both mounted and dismounted. Regreatably there were no horse holders for the dismounted dragoons.

I may have to use them as two seperate troops of 6 figures so I kept the two types of hat separate for the cavalry, which also helped as there is very little variation in the mounted figures.

If I were to reprint them I would reduce the thickness of the dismounted figures.

Anyone recognise these gunners?

These British artillerymen were found in a box of old minifigs, my guess would have been Hinchliffe, but they didn't use round bases.

Dead Man's Hand - figures painted

One of the items I bought as part of our old Deeside Defenders member Mike Yates wake sale was a starter set of Dead Man's Hand, which unexpectedly contained two sets of 28mm figures. I've now painted them up and they can now participate in club games.

The Lawmen

A slight diversion - Gladiators

While back I bought a set of EM4 pre-painted gladiators at Penkridge warboot sale. I have now got around to basing them properly so they can be used for games.

Colonial Militia

A couple of 28mm units produced from the free sprues that came with Wargames Illustrated units.

Skirmishers mostly wearing hunting shirts
Ordinary Militis with the rear rank produced by adding AWI heads to Russian Crimean bodies
Hopefully they'll see action in the Woebetides at Crisis Point, whenever it happens, hopefully September.

Last output for 2019 - Spanish Colonial Cavalry

A final push and I managed to finish these in time for the New Year celebrations. I had acquired some Warlord War of Spanish Succession Cavalry on the Britcon B&B as I already felt my 28mm Spanish needed some Colonial Dragoons.


I was unsure how to use the other 6 figuress, but in the end decided to create a Governors Bodyguard using the cuirassiers bodies.

28mm Spanish Infantry for New Spain

A selection of Spanish units to defend their colonies against pirates. Figures are Warlord (ex Wargames Factory) and the detail is rather flat for 28mm. I organised the units (companies) in twelves so I could used Pikemans Lament or Rebels and Patriots. All of the metropolitan units did send odd companies out to defend the colonies. The Blue coated unit is Colonial regulars.


I've spotted a few bits in the pictures that need touched up and I've still to add the flag


I will be buying some movement trays at Phalanx and I've also got to finish off the mounted officers.

Spanish Colonial Artillery

I had forgotten how much longer it takes to paint 28mm figures compared to 20mm, but I managed to complete the artillery before the month end. These are the Warlord ex Wargames Factory figures and the guns were assembled using the smaller barrels.

The limber is a Blotz MDF version that I bought as an experiment for a heavy gun limber. It didn't work for that, but with some left-over Valiant horses it works well here.

Eve of Edgehill

A last few bits for October - the Wargames Illustrated vignette of the Eve of Edgehill, plus an extra couple of bods found in a box of lead down at the club.

Shame I don't have any 28mm Royalists, they will just have to be objective markers!

More wagons - but 28mm

A change of scale - a pair of 28mm wagons bought from Warbases at Phalanx - I need these to go with my English Civil War figures to provide objectives when playing Pikemen's Lament.

Nice models, easy to put together. I just need to find some larger stowage for the bigger wagon, or make another load of hay.

A few more 28mm Saxons

The final batch of Gripping Beast Dark age warriors have been completed to boost my 28mm Saxons for either Saga or any other skirmish game.

More 28mm Saxons

At last I've completed another batch of the Gripping Beast Dark Age Warriors as some Saxon Spearmen a straightforward assembly of the figures. As before the shield designs are painted freehand.

Then some Archers, where I added bows and cut down the spears to looks like arrows. The latter would have worked in 20mm, but in 28mm I am considering whether or not to cut then off and add some made fro wire.

Just one more batch of spearmen and then I'll be finished in 28mm for a while.

Saxon Thegns

After months of sitting on or close to the workbench they are finished at last.

The figures are all 28mm Gripping Beast plastic Saxon Thegns (bought from Dave at Deeside Defenders) and a Hereward the Wake figure from Wargames Illustrated many years ago.

Just need to work on their supports and then I'll have a 28mm force I can use for Saga or Lion Rampant.
