Pictures from WMMS

Good day out at WMMS and plenty of chance to look around as I wasn't committed the helping out on the Lance & Longbow stand and this year there was plenty of inspiring games put on.

Here's the L&L society game, another Teutonic knights skirmish

A neighbouring table with 28mm WW2 desert action

Tony with his charge of the French cavalry at Waterloo

More Napoleonic action

A very nice Renaissance game

With a very tempting Ottoman galley

ECW action, if the boards look familiar it's because they were made for a Gettysburg game, Devils Den is hidden in the wood.

Some quite interesting buildings in the game

Indian Mutiny

WW1 I'm never convinced by the hex based trenches

WW2 Japanese attack on the Phillipines

Mexican-American War

Anglo-Sikh war

6th edition Ancients!!

Battle of Bouvines 1214 with the Society of Ancients. I took on the English/Imperial force and had apparently gained the upper hand when my opponent was dragged off to lunch by his wife!

WW1 action, much nicer trenches

WW2 Chain of Command

Great Northern War, more temptation.

A US 37mm gun on display, but I still can't work out where the bits of photo-etched brass in the S-Model kit go!

Off to WMMS/Sicily bits

A chance for a well deserved break and perhaps to find a few bits I need. In the meantime I've been working on the terrain and managed to finish some cactus atches and bamboo thickets

The bamboo came from a Chinese ebay supplier (link) and I used it by splitting some in half about four fronds up and a slighly lower whole piece to make three plant clumps. Seven of these were used for each thicket.

Blood on the Nile - Review

In my opinion this Black Powder scenario book is disappointing.

However this depends on why you are buying the book. In my view as a source for scenarios it is poor value for money, especially when compared to the Rebellion supplement. You only get seven scenarios compared with nineteen in Rebellion. The historical background is fine, but there is too much of it, the scenarios are OK but have errors and omissions that any reasonable proof reader/play tester should have picked up. The "Battle Reports" are mostly waffle and things happen that don't match the rules as written. The saving grace for me is the loads of eye-candy.

Troop stats - essentially the same as in the Main Rules scenario for British and Mahdists, Egyptians are covered in some detail for the first two scenarios.

Looking at the scenarios

Tel el Kebir - a direct assault on a position, enlivened by a night approach march with random movement. Strange that the British artillery is not included as a reinforcement after dawn.

Shaikan - The destruction of an Egyptian column - lots of different Egyptian units. The Mahdists are fairly standard but the use of dummy Mahdist units is mentioned in the battle report and it's not clear whether this was a one off for this game or whether it should be part of the scenario.

Fall of Khartoum - A race to kill Gordon between the Mahdist commanders. Four figure units for the defenders seems strange! Not clear how the defences are suppose to work and I was completely puzzled by the points system with -1 per figure replaced - very strange for a unit based system

1st El Teb - almost the same scenario as Shaikan just differences in the forces involved.

2nd El Teb is a poor "repeat" of the one in the rule book depicted as a direct attack on a ridge instead of the partial flank attack that actually happened. When you look into the scenario you find that the British don't have any field guns although they are mentioned in the historical background and the text. Madist skirmishers are shown in the stats, but not in the army list - the stats are for full sized units so they can't be sub-units of the main units.

Abu Klea - the Madists have 6 units of 6 riflemen and 12 spearmen, but nothing describes how these are used or how the stats apply compared to the standard 30 man units.

Omdurman - quite a good idea to look at the later stages of the battle. But to treat the Maxim as essentially a Gatling disregards to huge change in reliability from the early MGs

If you don't need the eye-candy then you are better using the scenarios and stats from theThud and Blunder campaign rules that are available on the Black Powder Yahoo group.

Sicily WIP part 1

Managed to make some substantial progress on the vegetation: forty "orange" trees. seven bamboo thickets and various Cacti. The bamboo and trees have been glued down onto foamcore but the cacti will be based on ordinary card.

Bersaglieri

As I mentioned in my previous posts these were needed to complete the infantry component of my Italian forces for North Africa. In particular because the early infantry organisations 1940-31 had far less heavy weapons then my current force based on Monty's Desert Battles.

Figures are the Caesar Italian Infantry

For Konrad - the colours used are
Undercoat and uniform/helmet/topee - Humbrol Sand (63)
Webbing, etc - HUmbrol Sea Grey (27)
Waterbottle - Humbrol Brick Red (70)
Boots - Humbrol Dark Earth (29)
all heavily drybushed with lightened Humbrol Sand
Rifle - Coat Arms Wood and Humbrol Gunmetal (53)
Bersagliari fez - Humbrol Scarlet (60)
Flesh - Humbrol Flesh (61) + wash of GW Ogryn Flesh

In retrospect I should have use white as an undercoat as the figures are slightly darker than my others that started with a lighter plastic.

On the Workbench - March 2015

I was hoping to start on my Mediaevals in March, but I really have to get started on the terrain for the big game and this will become my main priority for the next couple of months. Although I have some bits, mainly buildings, that I can use, the majority will be new and over the last month I've been buying bits over the internet. My biggest piece of luck was finding an almost complete sheet of insulation foam in a skip, this will easily provide all the seventeen hills I will need. So be prepare to see lots of Sicilian themed bits of terrain over the next few months. In addition I still need to finish off what's still on the workbench:-
  • An Italian winter battalion
  • the remaining bits of the Hungarian battalion
  • The Zvezda Russian winter MMGs and Mortar
  • the Saxon Thegns - these at last have the chainmail finished
  • A number of Italian desert Bersagliari (while sorting out my Italian last months I worked out what was needed to ensure all the possible Italian Rapid Fire orbats were covered

Hungarian Rifle Coys

Haven't managed to sort out the heavy weapons for the Hungarians and Italians yet, so I decided to carry on with just the rifle companies. The figures are all Strelets

and another oddment a reworked matchbox Panther in ambush camouflage
