A collection of WW2 bits

Almost all of these are 3D printed except the Spitfire.

An Achilles and M10 to replace both my Armourfast and Ready to Roll versions.

A pair of 1/76 Sextons to replace the PSC 1/72 versions, I just need to find some suitable crew.

A Stug 33B to replace the version that exploded.

An Airfix Spitfire that is the right version to use for early war unlike my existing model.

Also included is the pair of Somua MCGs shown in my last post

Out with the old and in with the .....

I was always frustrated by the look of the Fronline half tracks that I bought for my early war French army, but when I checked my sources it didn't look at all like the Somua MCG (or MCL) that I assumed it was supposed to represent. Move on more than a decade and I start looking fora Somua MCG to print, but no luck. But I did find a Vielfachwerfer auf Somua MCG so I printed the tracks for that and modified my old Fronline models.

Progress against plan Q3 2022

Again lack of progress, with the same pace continuing in Q3 as in Q2, and only completing 757 items so far this year. This is partly due to a number of problems with my resin printed vehicles, most of which have had to be drilled and drained of uncured resin. Even so some have still split and some irrepairably so.

Looking at progress against the detailed plan:-

First and foremost my plan is to meet with as many friends as possible, assuming that retrictions come to an end, other than that I'll be working on three themes. - underway - Beacon Wargames club is well established and we've now celebrated our first birthday. There have been less shows than pre-Covid and family comitments have continued to prevent me from attanding others. I had hoped to get to Attack at Devizes, but my Mother's guest room was suddenly shut down because of Covid.

Game specific projects

• Pegasus bridge and Horsa glider for a D-Day game - assembled and base coated the bridge
• Continuing to build my War of Spanish Succession forces, as quickly as Strelets release them - completed almost all my purchases, just a few commanders to follow. Maybe some new releases of cuirassiers shortly
• Rebase/upgrade the whole of my Anglo-Zulu War armies including the Boers - not started
• Attempt to rationalise my terrain - not started - due to family taking over the garage I missed the opportunity to have a sort out this summer

Reducing the existing stash, I'd like to make at least a 10% reduction - still underway - I had a purge in Q1 and sold some surplus on ebay and have started again in Q4

• Paint the already printed WW2 French vehicles - Completed, and painted the extras I have printed. Now need to paint all the replacements for those that subsequently "exploded"
• Extra Afrika Corps and Italian figures to convert my Rapid Fire troops to use Batttlegroup. - Completed
• French Goumier Platoon - Completed
• An Australian Platoon plus supports for the desert/Crete, etc - Completed.
• WW2 German Gebirgsjaeger and remaining Two platoons of winter infantry - not started
• Cavalry for the Seven Years War/Jacobite Rebellion - Completed
• Napoleonic Spanish artillery and more cavalry - Completed
• 1800 French in Egypt - double up the unit size from 12 to 24 - not started
• French Revolution - Cisapline legion troops - Underway
• More Crusader baggage and Saracen cavalry - not started
• Imperial Croat cavalry and Polish pancerni - not started
• WW1 odd bits and pieces - not started

Exploiting the 3D resin printer - I've learnt about post production problems, I have lost numerous vehicles due to the models "exploding". So far so good with my latest batches with have far larger vent/drain holes. I have also learnt how to slice and merge models using 4D builder.

• Completing my Japanese forces for Pacific/Burma, by printing a selection of suitable vehicles to hopefully cover various 1941-1945 campaigns. - Almost complete - a whole range of tanks, vehicles and guns have been printed and painted. Now need to work on some Shin-Hoto Chi-Ha's and Ho-Ha APc that I subsequently decided to print and add to my collection
• Gradually replacing poorly cast or moulded models with new resin prints - underway - in the latest print run I printed replacements for my existing Somua S35's, and then I had to reprint them once they "exploded" The latest print run included M10s and Sextons to replace my exisitng Armourfast and PSC versions
• LVTs and any other extra vehicles so I can carry out Pacific beach landing games - Completed - LVT's printed and painted
• Test printing of 20mm figures - Discovered the best approach was to print with a base, so I've learnt how to do that, but the bases do seem to be subject to warping
• Components for buildings, doors, windows, shutters etc. - not started
• Try some 1/100 moderns for NorthAG - Completed - printed a sufficient selection of West German vehicles for a Battlegroup Northag game
• More vehicles for "Setting the East Ablaze" - underway - Lanchester armoured cars completed. , The Austin armoured cars that "exploded" have now been reprinted, and I still not found any suitable trucks

On the workbench - October 2022

So I only painted 32 cavalry last month, so I felt I needed to breakdown the cause for my loss of output. I was away for aa third of the month and once I returned I spent most days printing a batch on the 3D printer. Given that this takes at least 2 hours per batch sorting out the files, then printing and cleaning up, so there goes another third. As for the rest a lack of motivation and being distracted (see below) explains it. So there are loads started, but not much finished! So of the items carried over

• Pegasus bridge - now base painted
• A river or suitable base for the bridge that hopefully links to my existing river. - apart from measuring up nothing has been done, I think I will use some plastic sheet that I have used before for a sea edge, but I need to source it. Banks will be added separartely.
• A Horsa glider to go with it. - I've openned the box and looked at the instructions
• An early war Spitfire from the stash - almost finished I have to add the decals
• A pair of Boer War Pom-Poms and crews - started but I tend to just add the occasional bit of colour left over from other work
• Cisapline Republic Infantry - well underway, the basic colours have been blocked in.

Items started but not planned for

• Russian motorcyclists, universal carriers and T60s - all straight from the printer
• French motorcyclists and cavalry - ditto
• A pair of British Sextons, an M10 and an Achilles - ditto
• Upgrading Austrian Napoleonic limbers - replacing the old Airfix style limbers with a 3D printed version
• Upgrading a couple of old French half tracks - with 3D printed Somua MCG tracks.

WSS British Dragoons

After what seems an age I have finished painting some units. These are the Strelets British Dragoons and I have painted the units from Ross's Dragoon Brigade plus one extra.

James Wynne's Regiment of Dragoons lated the Royal Irish Dragoons

John Hay's (Grey) Dragoons later the Scots Greys, some writers think they rode grey horses, but the Grey Dragoons title came from the coat colour immediately prior to the WSS and there is one picture that might show a couple of dragoons from the regiment on grey horses at Schellenburg.

The Erbprinz von Hessen-Kassel Dragoons made up the third regiment of the brigade

There were only two British dragoon regiments that served in Flanders through the WSS, so for a third I added Cunningham's/Killigrew's Dragoons that served in Spain

On the workbench - September 2022

Total loss of momentum last month with lots of accidents and incidents to reduce progress to a crawl. For example Pegasus bridge was undercoated, but the spray paint ran out after 3/4 was completed and Poundland didn't have any more stock and eventually when they did it was a slightly different shade. Bur at least it is now ready for tarting up. The other factor was that I went off for two weeks holiday walking on Exmoor and visiting family. So I will continue to work on

• A river or suitable base for the bridge that hopefully links to my existing river.
• A Horsa glider to go with it.
• An early war Spitfire from the stash
• WSS British and Hessian dragoons (these have been started)
• A pair of Boer War Pom-Poms and crews
• Cisapline Republic Infantry
• complete the latest batch of 3D printing

WSS yet more French Cavalry

I could easily have painted all the new Strelets Garde do Corps figures as that unit as it comprised eight strong companies, but instead I only painted one "company" from that unit and painted the rest as Gendarmerie de France.

For the Garde du Corps company I selected the 1st Scottish company, this will join the Grenadiers a Cheval and Gendarmes of the Guard in my Maison du Roi Brigade

The Gendarmerie also formed a strong Brigade and I selected the Reine, Dauphin and Bourguinon companies. I much prefer the paper flag I used for Bourguinon rather than my attempts at hand painting the moulded on Strelets flags.
